As you may or may not know, the plan with the highest (or lowest) premium is not necessarily the "best" plan. Your total plan costs are based on your premium, deductible, co-pay and/or co-insurance and your plan's formulary.
In our example below, the most economical plan happens to be the one with the lowest premium. Two of the medications are not covered on the one plan (and are therefore full price) and on the other plan they are non-preferred brands and therefore have a co-pay that is less than the retail cost of the medication. therefore the plan that uses a 25% coinsurance is less expensive (column 3).
